The Miraculous Medal
When Catholics use the specific phrase “Miraculous Medal” (often simply called the Medal of Our Lady of Graces), they are referring to a highly popular devotional sacramental.
Origin: It is based on a series of 1830 visions in Paris where the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Catherine Labouré.
Design: The front features Mary standing on a globe, crushing a serpent, with rays of light coming from her hands to symbolize graces given to those who ask. It is inscribed with the prayer: “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.”
Meaning: It is worn or kept as a physical reminder of Mary’s intercession, protection, and the outpouring of God’s grace
