Icon – Our Lady Of Perpetual Succour – Hanging – 17cm x 12cm x 1.8cm – Wood – Designed and Made in Greece
Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, also known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help, is a sacred title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary, traditionally represented by a highly symbolic 13th- to 15th-century Byzantine icon.
The word “succour” means assistance or comfort given in times of distress, emphasizing Mary’s role as an unceasing, ever-listening maternal intercessor for humanity. In the rich iconography of the painting, the Child Jesus is depicted running in haste to His mother for consolation after seeing the Archangels Michael and Gabriel holding the instruments of His future crucifixion, such as the cross, spear, and sponge.
This fearful rush is vividly illustrated by a sandal falling loose from Jesus’ foot as He grips His mother’s hand for comfort. While Mary tenderly cradles Jesus, her sorrowful yet compassionate eyes look directly outward at the viewer rather than at her Son. This gaze signifies that just as she comforted Christ in His human suffering, she stands ready to offer continuous comfort, hope, and protection to all spiritual children who turn to her in their everyday struggles.
