Joan of Arc (c. 1412–1431) was a French peasant girl who, believing she was acting under divine guidance, led the French army to crucial victories against the English during the Hundred Years’ War. At age 17, she influenced King Charles VII to let her lead troops to the besieged city of Orléans. She was captured, tried for heresy, and burned at the stake at age 19.
