St Joseph, the husband of Mary and foster father of Jesus, is a central figure in Christian tradition, revered for his humility, obedience, and protective role within the Holy Family.
The “Just Man”: In the Gospel of Matthew, Joseph is described as a “righteous” or “just” man. When he discovered Mary was pregnant, he intended to divorce her quietly to save her from public shame until an angel revealed the divine nature of the pregnancy in a dream.
Profession: Traditionally known as a tekton (Greek for craftsman or artisan), he is widely celebrated as a carpenter. He is said to have taught this trade to Jesus.
Patronage: Joseph is the patron saint of the Universal Church, fathers, workers, carpenters, the dying (for a “happy death”), and house hunters.
Feast Days:
19 March: The Solemnity of St Joseph, his primary feast day.
1 May: The Memorial of St Joseph the Worker, established by Pope Pius XII in 1955.
