The Old Testament Trinity (Hospitality of Abraham)
The most famous and traditional representation is the Old Testament Trinity, also known as the Hospitality of Abraham.
Biblical Basis: It is inspired by Genesis 18:1–15, where three mysterious angelic visitors appear to Abraham at the Oak of Mamre.
Rublev’s Masterpiece: The most celebrated version was painted around 1425 by the Russian monk Saint Andrei Rublev. His composition depicts three identical, equal angels seated around a table with a central chalice, symbolizing the eternal love and communion (perichoresis) of the Triune God.
Symbolism: Background elements include the Oak of Mamre (representing the Cross), a mountain (representing spiritual ascent), and a house (representing the heavenly realm). An open space left at the front of the table symbolically invites the viewer into the divine fellowship
